‘Future Steel’ Plant Demonstrator to Benefit Steel Companies

Chris Oswin and David Egner from the Materials Processing Institute will be attending the Future Steel Forum which takes place on 25-26th September at the Sofitel Hotel, Budapest, Hungary.

The Future Steel Forum is the key event for steel industry professionals to gain a greater understanding of 'smart manufacturing' and the application of Industry 4.0 technologies to the Steel Industry. It brings to together steel industry professionals with suppliers, experts from other industries and academics to discuss the opportunities, challenges and benefits of Industry 4.0.

The Materials Processing Institute has a steel plant capable of producing plain carbon and alloy steel types by continuous casting and ingot casting. The plant is used primarily for development of new steel alloys, but also supplies highly specialist steels. This facility is being reconfigured as a ‘Future Steel’ plant, providing a test bed for industry 4.0 technologies to be developed. The facility will be used by the Institute as a demonstrator of Industry 4.0 technologies for the Steel and Foundation Industries.

Chris Oswin leads the Digital Technologies group at the Materials Processing Institute which supports the development, implementation and utilisation of digital technologies into company’s activities, and David Egner is a Strategic Account Manager with extensive experience of technology management in manufacturing, where he has successfully managed research and development programmes to deliver new product developments and process enhancements.

Chris Oswin added: “Utilisation and development of digital technologies to support clients is not new to the Institute, in fact it has been done for many years for specific research projects, but the focus of the Digital Technologies group will further enhance and co-ordinate this level of support and we look forward to sharing our knowledge and experience with steel industry partners at Future Steel Forum”.
