John Ferriola to give Sir Henry Bessemer Lecture at 5th Postgraduate Research Symposium on Ferrous Metallurgy
John Ferriola, who was awarded the IOM3 Bessemer Gold Medal 2021, will be giving the Sir Henry Bessemer Lecture at the 5th Postgraduate Research Symposium on Ferrous Metallurgy taking place on 22nd February 2022 at Armourers’ Hall, London.
John is a former Chairman, President and CEO Nucor Corporation, USA. He led Nucor from 2011, when he became President, until end of 2019, when he retired, having served as Chairman, President and CEO.
During this time John led the redevelopment of the steel industry in the USA, redefining the role of the mini mill as a high-quality steel producer and serious competitor to the conventional integrated route. By investing in new technology, innovation and product development, Nucor has been able to take a leading position and develop a new business model that has been replicated by others. As pioneers of the commercialisation of twin roll casting, John has shown himself to be a true successor to Sir Henry Bessemer, bringing to full realisation one of Bessemer's own early patented inventions for efficient steel production. John also ensured that the business returned year on year strong financial results. He also served as Chairman of the World Steel Association in 2016 and 2017.
Sir Henry Bessemer Lecture 2021 - The Nucor Way
This lecture will focus on the unique characteristics of the Nucor culture, how it developed and strengthened over five decades, how it empowered Nucor teammates, and the critical role it played in the financial and technological success of the company.
Nucor’s unique culture enabled the company to grow from a small steel processing plant in South Carolina, to one of the largest and most profitable steel companies in the United States. This culture, which stresses teamwork, entrepreneurship, individual responsibility, and accountability, has also enabled Nucor to be a technological leader in the steel production and steel processing industry in the United States. Nucor led the commercialisation of many new steelmaking and rolling technologies, including the electric arc furnace, near net shape bloom casting, compact strip processing (CSP) of flat steel products, and many other steel-related production technologies.
