Life Cycle Assessment accreditation will help businesses to innovate and improve sustainability

The Materials Processing Institute is now listed as an accredited Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) consultant with EPD International.

This means that we can help businesses understand the full life cycle implications of their products or services along with the environmental impacts throughout all phases of their life. Understanding this helps companies to minimise environmental impacts, improve sustainability and open new market opportunities.

LCA offers a comprehensive, scientific, and data-driven approach to understanding and improving the environmental sustainability of products, services, and processes across its entire life cycle - from raw material extraction to disposal.

Conducting an LCA helps identify the stages in a products or services life cycle where the most significant environmental impacts occur. This can help with improving design, sourcing materials, or implementing more sustainable practices.

We carry out life cycle assessments in compliance with:

• BS EN ISO 14040:2006 - Environmental Management - Life Cycle Assessment - Principles and Framework

• BS EN ISO 14044:2006+A1:2018 - Environmental Management - Life Cycle Assessment - Requirements and Guidelines

As part of the process, we provide independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) which are based on LCA data, ensuring that the environmental impacts presented are comprehensive and scientifically sound. An EPD document provides transparent, verified, and comparable information about the environmental impacts of a product or service throughout its life cycle. An EPD helps to compare the environmental performance of similar products and guides companies in improving their products' environmental profiles.

Our accreditation means that we can provide Environmental Product Declarations that comply with the required standards.

• BS EN ISO 14025:2010 Environmental Labels and Declarations — Type III Environmental Declarations - Principles and Procedures

• BS EN 15804:2012:2019 Sustainability of Construction Works – Environmental Product Declarations – Core rules for the product category of construction products (for construction products)
