Adrian Normanton Medal winner tours the Normanton Plant
It was our pleasure to host Kohei Furumai, the winner of this year’s IOM3 Adrian Normanton Medal and give him a tour of the Normanton plant located at the Institute and named after Dr Adrian Normanton.
The Normanton Plant is a world-leading scale-up research facility that supports the steel industry and other Foundation Industries predominantly to scale up technologies. The plant hosts research equipment including a 7 tonne Electric Arc Furnace now in use extensively to test and scale up new Green Steelmaking technologies. The plant was named after Dr Adrian Normanton following his distinguished career in the steel industry, which included masterminding the complete refurbishment of this pilot plant in 2007.
The Adrian Normanton Medal is awarded to the best paper on the topic of steelmaking or casting. Kohei Furumai is a senior researcher at JFE Steel Corporation, Japan, where his research focuses on steel solidification during the continuous casting process. He was awarded the Adrian Normanton Medal for his research based around continuous casting, which has been published in the Iron & Steelmaking Journal. During the visit Kohei was also able to see our research laboratories and some of the more recent investments in equipment and facilities.
Kohei will be presented with the Adrian Normanton Medal at the 2024 IOM3 Awards in London on 5th December.
